isaac james creative // a jshipley design project.

Early on, we knew that The Salt Design Project would be all about creating websites that are unique to the artist in regards to both their personality and their work and being an artist myself, I knew first hand the importance of having a web presence that was not only well-designed, but also well-artciulated. I knew the importance of developing and maintaing a consistent brand and image and creating a space on the web in which people could connect with me as an artist and also get at sense of my style, vision and imagery. Coming from a background in communication studies and art, I’ve long been fascinated brand development and how it is achieved through imagery and design.

As we began considering taking on some site design projects, I realized rather quickly that in order us to accomplish our primary objective, we would need to refine our process and develop some rubrics and systems that would help us understand, extract, interpret, articulate, and display the image that any given artist wanted to convey. We needed to get them and then somehow, we needed to take what we got, and turn it into something aesthetically pleasing, engaging and relevant to their audience/market. So needless to say, we our work cut out for us. And I being the figure-out-who-they-are-and-what-they-are-about and make-it-all-look-pretty guy, I had to establish and refine my creative process.

And that’s when we decided we would prime the proverbial pump with Isaac’s custom Showit website. Isaac needed a site the showcased his performance art as a musical theatre actor and his visual art as a photographer. We wanted the site to be a hybrid because the bulk of his photography work is in the same sphere, and we saw significant crossover in terms of markets and reach. We wanted those interested in his theatre work stumbling upon his production photography and headshots because, well, they are the people who would hire him for such gigs. And those who were coming across his photography, would then stumble onto his theatre work and perhaps book him for gigs in that vein of work. With those goals in mind, we created isaacjamgescreative.com and their are essential two separate sites with a consistent vibe and feel through and through. The theatre side is more squeaky-clean, masculine and in line with the leading man roles he plays on stage, while the photography side is a bit more playful, quirky and upbeat to reflect Isaac’s personality and show his fun-loving and authentic approach to photography.

INSPIRATION
Since we knew that we wanted the site to have the same overall vibe in each section we had to pick a style that would work for both. Isaac loves simple and clean design yet he wanted there to be a level of warmth, energy and playfulness infused as well. He loves all things vintage, but not in an Anthropolie way, but in a masculine, Restoration Hardware kind of way. But the site need to be sleek and sexy, yet quirky and fun. We looked to J. Crew, Dolce & Gabanna, Details, GQ & Vanity Fair and looked to old school portraits of James Dean, Elvis and Jonny Cash. Here’s the board we came up with….

And here’s what resulted…

FEATURES
The site features a simple navigation bar for easy control and movement between the pages. We did an awesome hover over about page that is interactive and allows viewers to get to know Isaac a bit.

Isaac wanted a fun quirky contact form for his photography section and we ended up doing a sort of mad lib thing and people love it.

We also did lots of custom, clean image galleries which have captions and completely custom navigation controls.

Both the photography and theatre section have a “projects” page which features Isaac’s current projects and latest happenings.

PHOTO SHOOT
Of course, Isaac need brand new photos to go along with his bangin’ new site. So for the theatre side of things, we did an editorial-esque shoot on stage at his alma mater. Karen was sweet enough to work the lights so we could create some awesome theatrical effects and add some drama to the shots. We opted to have all the images in black and white and I just love them so. Here’s what resulted….

Hot diggity damn! That’s my man!:-)

I can’t tell you how many times a day, Isaac does that pose on the right. Haha. So typical.

We had Karen lower the lights for this one so we could get a cool back lit effect and also have a very back-stage, behing-the-scenes vibe to it.

Isn’t he adorable? Sigh.

I love this pairing…

And of course, a few dressing room shots…one of which we ended up using as the opener for the theatre side of the site.

For the photo side of the site, we did a more casual lifestyle shoot in a park and around Pasadena. I even snapped a few frames of him while we were eating lunch afterwards at our favorite Mexican restaurant across the street. Here’s a few of my favorite frames from that shoot.

This effect is not something I usually do, but I was experimenting with shooting at a higher aperture and I quite like the result. It has a film-y look to it…

I adore this next series…

And finally, the shot from Lupita’s. Bam!

IMPACT
Since the launch of his site back in June, Isaac has seen a significant increase in his photography bookings and has since even signed with a musical theatre agency. It was his website–that of course showcases his talent–that got him a meeting in the first place. He’s had over close to 2,000 hits and nearly 16,000 page views! His website coupled with his strong Facebook and Twitter presence has definitely helped his business gain the momentum it needed to get going. While Isaac had quite a bit of expedience both behind the camera and on stage, he’s website has helped him establish even more legitimacy and presence in both industries respectively.

The end. Be sure to check out his site HERE and lave him some comment love and of course, if you’re interested in seeing more of his latest goings-in, hit up his Facebook page HERE.

amanda + james // a los angeles wedding editorial.

It was Amanda’s tonsillitis that brought these two together. You see James just so happens to be an ear, nose and throat doctor, and when Amanda went in for her tonsillectomy, it was one of those oh-hey-there-handsome-doctor-man moments for her. And of course, he was all sorts of “why hello there pretty and awesome and fun patient of mine!” So needless to say, they were smitten with each other from the start, and naturally one thing led to another, and suddenly they found themselves falling in love and pining to spend the rest of their lives together. And let me tell you, Amanda + James make the sweetest pair. Being a musical theatre actress, she is magnetic and wonderfully vibrant. And while he may come from a lively, Greek family, he is calm, quiet and of course, attentive and present to Amanda is the most genuine of ways. It’s no wonder to me why they are perfectly suited for each other.

Amanda + James’ wedding was one of most timeless, sophisticated, intimate and downright gorgeous weddings I’ve photographed. Between the classic Tuxedos and bowties, the chic metallic color palette, the breathtaking artitecture of the church, the intimacy & coziness of the Club , and those stunning floral designs, Amanda created a memorable event that was truly elegant and beautiful. And beyond that, Amanda + James’ friends and family were all delightful, sweet and fun and a joy to spend the day with. Sigh. Isaac was unable to shoot with me this time around, so I enlisted the help of the awesome, incredible Derek Frenzel. He was such a help and was particularly skilled at working with the kiddos. I think all those children he’s been raising is paying off.:-)

And of course, special thanks to the amazing team we got to work alongside! Church // Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, Reception venue & food // Ramsey’s at the Club, Floral Design & Tablescapes // Finishing Touch Wedding Design, Cake // Michelle’s Bakery, Amanda’s Gown // Alfred Angelo Bridal, Tuxedos // Friar Tux, Hair & Make-up // Nancy Gettinger.

We started the day off at the Club where we met up with Amanda, her bridesmaids, and her family. We had a few moments to photograph her beautiful gown and her shoes before so climbed in for some portraits before the ceremony.

Amanda, you are stunning.

While I was photographing the bride, Derek captured this adorable shot of the flower girls.

The light was quite harsh pouring in this lounge area outside the ballroom, but luckily there were shades we were able to pull back. And of course, it was breezy, but thanks to some of Amanda’s awesome friends and few pillows, we made it work. I’m thrilled with what resulted. So elegant and swanky. Bam.

This ring-bearer was hilarious. He had such a mischievous manner about him and it cracked us all up.

After we finished up with the ladies, we ventured to the church to meet up with the groom and his guys for some portraits pre-ceremony. How amazing is that architecture?

And this turquoise door? I die. It was the perfect back drop for portraits. I used it as many times as I could. Haha.

James looking all sorts of dapper…

Check out this BREATHTAKING church. It’s it unbelievable? I just about fell over when I walked in.

This two boys were hilarious. One of them walked down backwards. Haha.

The emotion and anticipation was palpable as Amanda’s father walked her down the aisle…first up, Derek’s angle. Then mine.

The wedding ceremony is considered a sacrament in the Greek Orthodox Church and it was nothing short of beautiful and intimate.

The light bouncing off the concrete created the most perfect light to work with. I loved the soft, elegant color palatte Amanda picked and the church steps were the idyllic setting for bridal party portraits.

We sent the crew up the hill to the reception, and spent sometime with the bride and groom capturing their beautiful connection and romance of their wedded bliss.

Two of my favorites from the day…

I love this boutonniere shot Derek got…

After the sunset, we battled traffic up the 101 but made it just in time to start the party. Since Amanda was so on top of it, she had everything set up in the morning when we first got there, so we were able to photography the oh so pretty ballroom and tablescapes. I loved the use of metallics, diamonds, and white flowers. It created an elegant, classic and intimate space to celebrate the newly wedded couple.

Amanda & James prepared an elegant waltz for their first dance and it was impeccably executed.

And that’s a wrap. Thank you Amanda & James for inviting me to capture your beautiful wedding. It was an honor and joy. Hope you’re having an amazing time in Greece. xoxo – j.

tim burton, mid-century design + the best brownie ever.

Last week, Isaac and I met up with my Auntie and cousin to check out the much talked about Tim Burton Exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. And let me tell you, it was incredible. That man is quite accomplished and his vivid imagination and impeccable technique has produced quite a remarkable and expansive body of work. If you’ve not yet seen it, hurry! It’s closing on Halloween. So if you’re free this weekend, get your tickets here!

On an entirely different note, right next to the Tim Burton exhibition is the coolest, most squeal-inducing exhibition I’ve seen in a long time. It’s called California Design, 1930–1965: “Living in a Modern Way”.  And oh-em-gee, I nearly wet myself when we stumbled across it. It spoke to my modern soul, and I made at least five laps around the place snapping hoards of photos. Yes, photography was permitted in this one. I asked. I know, I know, I’m such a rule follower. But those security guards are vigilant and scary. Haha. Here’s a handful of my favorite pieces on display, but please do go check it out for yourself. I just read that it’s open till June 2012, so that leaves ample time for me to go again. And again. So if you plan on going, let me know and I’ll tag along.

Hello geometric graphic design and awesome lamp.

I’m a huge fan of pairing dark wood and white together. And this below is perfection.

Mid-centry ceramics. Sleek and minimalist yet full of movement.

The classic American icon…Airstream!

I love a good mid-century fiberglass chair.

Geometric jewelry? I die. How can I get my hands on something like this for a shoot?!

After we toured the Tim Burton exhibition and I made another lap around the California Design exhibition, we ventured over to Joan’s On Third and partook in one of the best dining experience we’ve all had in quite some time. This place is fabulous. It has tons of yummy treats, gourmet meats, breads and cheeses and the most fantastic sammies, soups and salads. Seriously, it was amazing.I had a maple rosemary grilled chicken sammie on a rustic roll and the best gooey, chocolatey brownie ever. Go there right now and get one. You won’t regret it.

And to end, here are a few shots of Isaac and I experiencing the art…

See we are fun. You should come art-museuming with us something.:-)

That’s it for now. Oh happy day.

danielle + william // a convict lake wedding editorial.

If you know me, you may know that my favorite season is fall. I love any excuse to wear a coat and wrap a scarf around my neck. I love a good bowl of soup and cup of hot apple cider. I practically do a happy dance every time I spot a changing leaf, and I stomp around my parent’s backyard just so I can hear the sound of crunching beneath my feet. And to make autumn all the sweeter, I often have weddings back home this time of year, and I tell you what, it’s seriously the best and most beautiful time to get married in the Sierras. Yup. And this year was no exception…

Danielle + William said “I do” on the most perfect fall day lakeside surrounded by stunning mountain peaks and of course their nearest and dearest family and friends. Lucky for us (and for the photos), the afternoon brought with it a layer of clouds that created the most wonderful diffused light. It worked perfectly for the vibe and style of the wedding…soft, romantic, dreamy with a touch of drama and pop. i.e. Danielle’s fierce Steve Madden heels and of course, you put anything against the backdrop of Convict Lake Resort and you can’t help but get a sense of BAM! It is literally breathtaking and, of course, one of my favorite places in the Eastern Sierra. But beyond the amazing location and the dreamy light, the people involved were downright awesome. Between the fantastic couple, the adventurous and hilarious groomsmen, the helpful and fabulous bridesmaids, and the bride and groom’s sweet families, we were in for a fun, exciting and memorable day, and it was nothing short of amazing.

Special thanks to the awesome  team we had the pleasure of working with…Venue & Catering // Convict Lake Resort, Floral Design // Debbie Harper, Cake // Sue Ebersol, DJ & Video// Slash Dot Creative, Bride’s Hair // Taylor Eastman, Bride’s Gown // Bridal & Veil, Brides’s Shoes // Steve Madden, Jewelry & Tuxes // Michelle’s Fine Jewelry & Gift

After saying hello to the ladies and the bride, I hung out with the boys for a bit while Isaac got getting ready shots of the ladies. Here’s william looking all sorts of dapper. And the boys out on the jetty…by far one of my favorite groomsman shots to date. I’m relieved no one slipped into the lake. That would be have be awkward in those grey tuxes. Haha.

Danielle’s gorgeous gown…

A pairing of my two favorites details shots a la Isaac James. Danielle’s brother Taylor styled her hair.

Hey Steve Madden.

STUNNING!!!

Danielle’s bridesmaids were awesomely attentive to her every need and I love this shot of them helping her get her fierce heels on.

How breathtaking is this setting?! Wow. It was the perfect backdrop for the heartfelt and simply beautiful ceremony.

A little surprise from Will…it was awesome.

Isaac got the this great shot of the Bridesmaids while I was shooting Danielle on the horse. How fun is this?

Such a fun group of women…many of whom I went to high school with. Lana (pictured with Danielle on the left) is one of my oldest friends. We played together as babies and have been friends ever since. Sigh. I love that girl.

This pairing exemplifies William’s absolute love and adoration for his bride. Sigh. The one of Isaac got of him holding her shoes is my favorite image from the day. It’s subtle but tells such a beautiful story.

We had a hot ten minutes to do their portraits because it was starting to rain, and my oh my did they work it. Seriously, that make it so easy!

I can’t get over how absolutely gorgeous Danielle is…

The tent was romantic, dreamy and cozy and was the perfect setting for the delicious dinner and dance party.

One of the best grand entrances I’ve seen. How fun is this?

Danielle and two of her best friends post for a self portrait . I love it.

featured // style unveiled.

Sometimes I set goals and then I write them down because you know me, I love me some lists. And then I like to cross things off said list. I feel all sorts of productive and accomplished once that line goes through the letters. Last year I made a list of things I wanted to accomplish and one of those items was to get some more of my weddings published. Well, this past week, I crossed that one of my list. Twice! Because not one but two of my weddings were featured on the awesome wedding inspiration blog Style Unveiled. I was tickled pink when Heather replied me because I love Style Unveiled and the selected weddings were two of my all time favorites: Tiffany + David’s Santa Barbara Wedding at El Capitan Canyon & Syndee + Joel’s Los Angeles Eco-Backyard Wedding. I was (and still am) giddy with excitement. It’s like getting nominated for homecoming king but WAY cooler. Haha. And to make things all the sweeter, both Syndee + Tiffany said the kindest things about their experiences. Sigh. I love my brides (and grooms), and I’m so blessed by them and so honored to have photographed their weddings. And of course, I write this not to brag or flaunt my mad skills (ha) but merely to document the line through the words “get published” and to invite you to leave some comment love for these awesome couples over at Style Unveiled.

For Tiffany + David’s feature click here. Special thanks to Montana Dennis who shot this one with me.

And for Syndee + Joel’s feature click here. Love and props to my man Isaac James for shooting it with me.

Montana Dennis - My Man!!! So sick!!! Love love love it.

candice + vince // an orange county wedding editorial.

She loves craft nights and junior mints and in her words “dancing her ass off at a concert”. He loves almond roca and to watch the food network and of course apply the learned techiques in the kitchen. Together they enjoy evening walks with the dog, playing the garden and naps in their hammock and of course, concert going with friends. Their energy and live-life-to-the-fullest-ness is contagious. They are just downright fun and are the types of people you can’t help but want to be around as often as possible. They’re the ones you want to invite to every party because they keep things interesting and fun. They are avid Coachella goers. They go all out and have been dubbed the mom & pop of thier friend group because they take care of all the planning and logistics and make sure everyone is having a grand ol’ time. I like that about them.
v
Their wedding was no exception and it was probably one of the funnest parties I’ve been to in quite a while and one of our favorite weddings today. I wasn’t surprised in the slightest because, well, that’s how they roll. I mean come-on, they had a disco ball above the altar. Sigh. I love them. And without further ado, Isaac and I present to you Candice + Vince’s Rancho Las Lomas Wedding Editorial…As always, check out their website here for a slideshow and many more images.:-)

Yes there was a disco ball involved. Awesome.

This was all Isaac’s idea and of course they were totally down and loved every minute of it.

v
Vince may or may not have had a bit of an encounter with a spider web whilst setting up for this shot. My bad.
Mustaches were woven throughout the event. So playful and downright cool.

Ah, the colors were so vibrant and the whole setting was simply gorgeous. Sigh.

How fun are the lips and ‘staches champagne flutes for each member of the bridal party?!

Cake cutting under a disco ball. Is there really any other way?

And a few dance shots to finish off the post….

Candice changed into a vintage flapper dress for the dance party and she made it look fabulous!!

There you have it. As always, check out their website here for more images.
